ΥΠΟΥΡΓΕΙΟ ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΜΟΥ & ΑΘΛΗΤΙΣΜΟΥ – ΔΗΜΟΣ ΔΡΑΜΑΣ
Name: Michael Kam
Tagline: In a tiny island when independence was once but a whisper, its little boys and girls can only sing foreign nursery rhymes...
Synopsis: Long before Singapore was a modern tropical city, it was a tiny colony, beholden at one time to the British and at another time, to the Japanese.
Harking back to these different times and distant worlds, the children from this little island would find themselves gathered to learn to sing along to unfamiliar nursery rhymes that originate from another land far, far away.
In one scenario, a young girl learns to sing an English nursery rhyme amidst a birthday celebration. It is thrown by her father’s boss for the latter’s daughter.
In another scenario, a young girl struggles to recite a Japanese nursery rhyme while her ernest Japanese tutor and her native classmates look eagerly on.
The settings may seem innocuous, but it is not, for these fertile minds will be shaped by such experiences.
Short cv: Born and raised in Singapore, Michael completed a post-graduate diploma in film production from Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
He currently teaches in his alma mater in its film diploma programme. His short films have screened in festivals such as Berlinale, Uppsala, Encounters, and won awards in Tampere and Hamburg, among others.
